Her Captain by Taryn Kincaid ♥ Review, Fun Facts & GIVEAWAY ♥ (Contemporary Romance)

Capricorn Slate Claybourne, an ex-Seal and former sniper who has seen and done things in country that no man should endure, returns to his bucolic hometown on Pieberry Island, desperate for the mundane, everyday routines he once wanted to escape.

A broken, soul-dead man unable to be around people, his body still a lethal weapon when his night terrors wake him from sleep, Slate’s failed to keep the promise he made to the commander who died in his arms: to look after the older man’s baby girl.

But animated Aries Holly Harper is not the pigtailed tot Slate expected her to be, when she lands on the island to take over the decrepit Pieberry House, determined to turn it into an inn for summer tourists, and even more determined to yank Slate back into the land of the living.

First she crashes into him at the island’s holiday Winter Festival, dumping a towering stack of pies at his feet, then she drags him off to a fortune teller against his better judgment. Except for the sizzling attraction smoldering between them, they’re incompatible in every way. But when a furious December nor’easter traps them together at Pieberry House, will Slate and Holly overcome their pasts and discover they are two halves of a whole?

A steamy and incredibly well-written story!

First of all, I loved this book.

While I wish it was longer and the tension built up a little more between the characters, the actual writing was wonderful! The non-cliche words and phrases Taryn chose made the book flow in a steady rhythm and made it even more enjoyable!

I liked reading Holly because she was no-nonsense. She didn't play games, but rather knew what she wanted and went after it.

And she wanted Slate.

Which was fabulous, because all Slate wanted was to be left alone. This dynamic made for interesting growth of the two as characters, and I liked reading how their feelings evolved in the time they were together.

Slate was the definition of "tortured hero," and I absolutely loved him.

And don't even get me started on the Happily Ever After scene! I was almost in tears it was so touching!

All in all, this was a great book. The idea of the series is intriguing and I'd love to explore it (especially to read the one about my zodiac sign!). I'd definitely be VERY interested in reading more books by Taryn!

***I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review***

There’s a scene in HER CAPTAIN in which the heroine, impulsive, spontaneous Aries Holly Harper, drags the hero, steady-as-she-goes ex-Navy SEAL and Capricorn Slate Claybourne to a fortune teller at the Winter Festival. Slate’s not someone who kicks and screams, otherwise Holly would have dragged him there kicking and screaming. But he’s not exactly a believer in things crystal. Are you? Do you wear them? Did you know they are supposed to have certain properties?
Capricorn, of course, is an earth sign. That’s where I got the hero’s name: Slate Claybourne.
The Capricorn’s birthstone is, most often, the garnet. We usually see garnets as wine-colored, a much deeper, more passionate red than a ruby, which stands to reason since the gem is a strong stone said to create good vibrations and loving relationships. Its energy is said to manifest in the “root chakra,” which governs such things as sexuality.
Yep, that’s my boy Slate, all right!
And Aries Holly, well, she just downright shines. Aries is a fire sign and the heroine of HER CAPTAIN is one fiery woman. Her birthstone is the diamond. Sparkly. Glowing. Solidifying relationships. Eternal. Does anything more really need to be said about that?

Yin meet yang. Night meet day. Mutable force meet immoveable object.

Every one of Holly’s most compulsive, impulsive brain waves fluttered like a hummingbird wing. Slate Claybourne affected her like the aftershock of an earthquake. Abuzz with excited tremors, she didn’t know whether to leap into his arms and climb him or run screaming away in the other direction.

Oh, yes, you do know, girlie-girl, one of the imps on her shoulder crooned.

Danger, danger, Will Robinson, the imp on the other shoulder screamed in warning protest.

Why had her father told her to search out the former SEAL? The “if you’re reading this”letter he’d sent—not to be opened until she’d met Captain Claybourne—burned a hole beneathher pillow at Pieberry House, still unopened and unread. Had Dad thought the infamous Sand Shark would protect her from her string of notoriously bad choices?

Just looking at the ripped and cut former SEAL in the flesh made her stupid and silly and all but dissolved the remnants of her filter, always fragile during the most mundane of times and less than a wisp of thread now.
